Spitzer Observations of Low Luminosity Isolated and Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

چکیده
We examine the infrared properties of five low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) and compare them with related but higher surface brightness galaxies, using Spitzer Space Telescope images and spectra. All the LSBGs are detected in the 3.6 and 4.5μm bands, representing the stellar population. All but one are detected at 5.8 and 8.0μm, revealing emission from hot dust and aromatic molecules, though many are faint or point-like at these wavelengths. Detections of LSBGs at the far-infrared wavelengths, 24, 70, and 160μm, are varied in morphology and brightness, with only two detections at 160μm, resulting in highly varied spectral energy distributions. Consistent with previous expectations for these galaxies, we find that detectable dust components exist for only some LSBGs, with the strength of dust emission dependent on the existence of bright star forming regions. However, the far-infrared emission may be relatively weak compared with normal star-forming galaxies. Subject headings: galaxies: evolution galaxies: photometry

Dissecting the luminosity function of the Coma cluster of galaxies using CFHT wide field images
We determined the relative spatial density of the Coma cluster galaxies selected by luminosity, and the contribution of the galaxies of each central brightness to the luminosity function (i.e. the luminosity function bi–variate in central brightness). The Coma cluster and control fields were imaged using the CFH12K (42 × 28 arcmin) and UH8K (28 × 28 arcmin) wide–field cameras at the Canada–Fran...
متن کاملThe Parameter Space Occupied by Galaxies : The optical window
We discuss the optical parameter space (luminosity and surface brightness) over which galaxies are known to exist and report on the results from three recent datasets: the Two-degree Field Galaxy Red-shift Survey, the Hubble Deep Field north, and the Local Group. These data are combined to provide a unique and comprehensive insight into the luminosity distribution of galaxies over the range −24...
متن کاملThe low surface brightness extent of the Fornax Cluster
We have used a large format CCD camera to survey the nearby Fornax cluster and its immediate environment for low luminosity low surface brightness galaxies. Recent observations indicate that these are the most dark matter dominated galaxies known and so they are likely to be a good tracer of the dark matter in clusters. We have identified large numbers of these galaxies consistent with a steep ...
متن کاملUncovering the Near-ir Dwarf Galaxy Population of the Coma Cluster with Spitzer Irac
We present the first results of a Spitzer IRAC (Infrared Array Camera) wide-field survey of the Coma cluster. The observations cover two fields; the first is a 0.733 deg region in the core of the cluster (Coma 1), the second a 0.555 deg off-center region located ∼57′ (1.7 Mpc) south-west from the core (Coma 3). The IRAC observations, although short 70-90 s exposures, are very sensitive; we dete...
متن کاملThe Formation of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies
The formation of low surface brightness galaxies is an unavoidable prediction of any hierarchical clustering scenario. In these models, low surface brightness galaxies form at late times from small initial overdensities, and make up most of the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. Because there are tremendous observational biases against finding low surface brightness galaxies, the obse...
